When to Use Your Hazard Lights While Driving
When activated, your vehicle’s hazard lights indicate to other drivers a dangerous situation. Here are a few instances when you should turn on your hazard lights to help protect yourself and the drivers around you.
Trouble With the Law
Everyone makes mistakes behind the wheel, but being pulled over by a police officer still ranks as one of the scariest situations for drivers. If you’ve broken a driving law, and a police officer wants you to pull over, turn on your hazard lights. This lets the officer know you saw them, and you’ll obey the instruction to pull over.
Accident Protocol
It’s hard to think straight when you’ve been in an accident. But, if you can, it’s important to flip on your hazard lights. This signals to other drivers what’s happened.
Mechanical Failure
A mechanical issue with your vehicle that causes you to stop driving is cause for activating your hazard lights. Find the safest spot you can that’s out of traffic and turn on your hazard lights. The lights will help drivers see you so you can safely call for help or tend to your vehicle. When changing a flat tire on the side of the road or near traffic, be sure to turn your hazard lights on, too.
