Spring will soon be upon us, and here in Texas that means a whole lot of rain is possible. And spring rain can make road conditions treacherous in a matter of minutes. Even if you’re an experienced driver, you may come across a situation where you’re not sure what to do. If you follow these tips for driving safely in the spring rain, you’ll be prepared for even the heaviest of thunderstorms.

Maintain Your Windshield Wipers

If your windshield wipers are old and worn out they’re not going to do you much good in a rainstorm. It’s a good idea to replace your wiper blades seasonally to ensure they’re in good working order. Graff Chevy can take care of that for you next time you’re in for an oil change.

Slow Down

Speeding in the rain is not a good idea. The faster you’re driving, the more likely you are to lose control. Stick to a safe speed and avoid hard braking or sharp turns as they can lead to hydroplaning, which is when your wheels can lose contact with the road because of a film of water.

Steer Into a Skid

If you do feel yourself hydroplaning, it’s important to remain calm and steer into the skid. Steering away from it might seem more natural but that can actually cause you to lose control even further. Don’t slam on the brakes; instead, gently ease off the gas and breathe deeply until you either regain control or come to a stop.
