While you may think of pickup truck drivers as older folks, the latest buying trends are indicating that the opposite is true. According to CNBC, the Millennial generation has overtaken the Baby Boomer generation as the biggest buyers of trucks in the U.S. for the first time ever.

J.D. Power’s Findings

In the past, data showed that Millennials were less interested in driving than previous generations, but in April 2020 Millennials bought more trucks than their older counterparts, according to data from J.D. Power.

“Demographic information moves very slowly, but [in 2020] Millennials took over in April during the peak of the coronavirus pandemic. We thought it was kind of a blip, but it’s only increased since then,” J.D. Power Vice President of Data and Analytics Tyson Jominy told CNBC. “It shifted overnight, and it has gotten faster every month.”

While this shift would have happened eventually, Millennials have been taking over from Boomers when it comes to truck buying at a faster-than-expected pace. That could be attributed to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic making travel harder or less appealing to Millennials. Instead of relying on public transit for everyday commutes or planes for vacations, Millennials are using personal vehicles to get around.
