In 2010, they introduced MPGe, which stands for “miles per gallon gasoline equivalent.” This metric quantifies the distance an electric vehicle can travel using the energy equivalent to one gallon of gasoline, with electric power measured in kilowatts. When you explore options for an all-electric vehicle, you’ll notice that the window sticker displays only the MPGe, as these vehicles rely solely on electric power and lack a gas-powered engine. In contrast, plug-in hybrids, which can operate on gas-only, all-electric, or hybrid power, have both MPG (miles per gallon) and MPGe values listed on their window stickers. This dual measurement system enables consumers to compare and evaluate the efficiency of these versatile vehicles effectively.

How is MPGe Determined?

As the governmental agency tasked with evaluating a vehicle’s fuel efficiency and environmental impact, the EPA employs a specific methodology to determine these factors for conventional internal combustion engine cars. They conduct tests under typical driving conditions to determine the mileage achievable with one gallon of gasoline. However, when assessing electric vehicles, a distinct approach becomes necessary. Scientists needed to establish an equivalent measurement in kilowatts for the energy contained in one gallon of gasoline. After careful analysis, they arrived at the value of 33.7 kilowatt-hours (kWh) as the equivalent to one gallon of gasoline. Therefore, when you see a number before MPGe on the window sticker, that is how many miles the vehicle can drive on 33.7 kWh of the battery’s charge.
